Qoya is based on a simple idea that through movement, we remember. We remember, as women, that our essence is wise, wild and free. Wise, wild and free also draws reference to the movement forms that we practice in a Qoya Class. Wise evokes the wisdom of yoga, wild the creative expression in dance and free invites us to expand our capacity to feel in the body. Qoya is not a dance class, it’s a movement experience where we focus more on how it feels and less on how it looks. There are no levels in Qoya and there is no way of doing it wrong. The way you know you are doing it right is that it feels good and true. Each Qoya class has a theme in which we get to explore what our relationship is to that theme and how that the theme feels within our body.

About Joi:
Like many Qoya Teachers will say, Qoya found me. After birthing my beautiful daughter in 2010 I fell into the darkness of undiagnosed postpartum which showed up in the form of anxiety. I was constantly in hypervigilant mode and after seeing multiple doctors and being on medications that numbed my body and soul, I decided to quit it all and find a way to heal myself. Western Medicine and pharmaceuticals robbed me of my natural powers to dream, feel and intuitively know how to trust my own body’s wisdom to heal. In December 2015 my best friend sent me a video interview with Rochelle Schieck explaining the Movement Practice she created called Qoya. It was like being struck by lightning as I watched the video. I immediately found the closest Qoya class (there was only one instructor in my entire state of CT) and signed up! On a cold, dark winter’s night in a cozy Yoga Barn in Redding, CT, I joined a circle of sisters for my first Qoya class. It was magical and healing. I felt parts of my body that I had not felt in years awaken. I knew this was my medicine and I knew that I needed to figure out a way to become a teacher so that I could share this practice with as many women in my community as possible. I hope you will join me so together we can dance and remember our essence as wise, wild and free women.
